FIVE YEARS AGO

The “Blaze” team with Capt. Waylon Mills took first place in the World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament, right after taking top honors at Ladies Day.

TEN YEARS AGO

There was a protest in the Pass. About 20 boats carrying more than 100 people were protesting the first Professional Tarpon Tournament Series event of the season. Four tassels were turned at The Island School, including Luke Crosser, Dafne Garcia, Abigail Turner and Jake Van Atten.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The first annual Ziggy Memorial Poker Tournament and Cookout was held. New signage at the beach access streets had residents in an uproar.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Bridge board members agreed to revisit the issue of speeding along the island’s causeway, but they turned down a plan to lower the speed limit from 35 to 20 mph.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Cool weather meant cool waters, which meant less tarpon being caught in local tournaments. Releases were down by 50 percent, in fact.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Major renovation and restoration of the Boca Grande Community Center was slated to begin within the next couple of months, with input coming from Friends of the Community Center, the Historic Preservation Board and the Boca Grande Woman’s Club.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

It was said that the island tipped to the west this week long ago, as Joy and Jimbo Wyman got married and everyone was invited to the Amory Chapel to witness it.
