BY WESLEY LOCKE – For the 30th Anniversary of the Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament, we were promised no fish and rough waters. It’s no secret that women and mothers know how to take on a stormy situation with grace. It got a little bumpy in the last hour, but 36 boats and 138 incredible anglers released 15 tarpon in three hours!
In first place was “Team Bent Rod Squad” including Capt. Chad Bombenger, mate Carson Bombenger and anglers Kelly Smith, Ashley Tormey, Karen Tormey and Kim Mead. They won with four releases aboard the vessel Sabalo.
Second place went to “Team Had ’Em” with two tarpon. Their captain was Van Hubbard, and anglers were Leslie Coleman, Betsy Joiner, Becky Paterson and Trisha Lowe.
In third place was “Team Silver Queens” with the last tarpon released. Their hookup time was 7:23:39 p.m. Anglers included Julie Camp, Alison Henderson, Renee Lindsey and Cannon Wenzel, and their captain was Nelson Italiano aboard Little Spook. Marshall Locke was the mate.
The “Individual Angler” award went to Ashley Tormey for most releases by an individual angler (2).
Of the 15 releases during the tournament, Sabalo had four, Had ’Em had two, Big Mouth had two, Little Spook had two, and Whalebone, Miss Sarah, Phil-Jack, Chaos and Miss Aubrey all had one release. The Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all those who participated in this event, as well as our generous sponsors, judge boats, press boats: IslandTV, Boca Beacon, artist Brendan Coudal, entertainers Kyle Rich and Marty Moss, and our venues that made LDTT fabulous – the Boca Grande Community Center, Miller’s Dockside and Scarpa’s Coastal. This community is gracious to support this tournament and make it possible to carry on this beloved tradition.
So, most importantly, thank you Boca Grande and the ladies that make it special!
