Obituary: Vaughn Everett McCarthy

 
Vaughn Everett McCarthy, 69, was born September 19, 1946 in Portland, Maine. He moved to St. Petersburg in 1957 and died at home in South Pasadena this past Tuesday, Dec. 8. He was a graduate of Northeast High School in St. Petersburg and was a combat United States Marine corporal wounded in Vietnam and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He attended the University of Florida and was a prominent architect and contractor. He designed and built many beautiful homes and buildings in Pinellas County as well as a beautiful townhome project in Colorado Springs.
He designed the home of his brother-in-law Bill Caldwell on Palm Avenue here in Boca Grande. Several of his homes were featured in both the Sunday St. Petersburg Times and Tampa Tribune as well as Southern Living magazine.
An avid golfer, Vaughn was a member of Pasadena Yacht and Country Club since 1969. He was golf coach for the Canterbury School in St. Petersburg from 1997 to 2005. Additionally, he enjoyed many days in Boca Grande staying at the Caldwell Family home on Waterways and fishing on the Runaway with Bill and enjoying Katie Caldwell’s fine cooking.
He was predeceased by his son, Rhett Everett McCarthy, and is survived by his wife of 44 years, Elise ‘Desi’ Caldwell McCarthy; his son, Kyle R. McCarthy (Chris); a granddaughter, Matilda Rose McCarthy; and sisters Kathleen Fisher (Tom) and Beth Cremer (Jeff); as well as several nieces and nephews and their children.
There will be a remembrance gathering Wednesday, Dec. 16 at Pasadena Yacht and Country Club from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Vaughn always knew people no matter where he went. He was loved by many who appreciated his sense of humor and many talents, not to mention his magnificent eyebrows.
