Obituary: Philip Edward Shanley

shanleyPhilip Edward Shanley, 61, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of February 20, 2015 after a five year battle with cancer.

Phil was a much loved husband, dad, son, brother, and friend.

Phil is survived by his wife of 33 years, Jane; his daughter, Sage; stepdaughter Jennifer (Tim) and their three boys, Brody, Payton, and Kade; mother, Helen; and four brothers, Terry, Neil, Brian, Charlie and their families.

He was the son of the late Philip Shanley, Sr.

Phil was a resident of Weekapaug, Rhode Island and Boca Grande. He was a 1971 graduate of Attleboro High School (MA). He went on to Saint Anselm’s College in New Hampshire and played four seasons of varsity tennis.

For the past 28 years, he and his wife have owned and operated the Pond View Racquet Club in Westerly, R.I. Phil was the head tennis professional at the Weekapaug Tennis Club for 34 years and Providence College’s men’s and women’s head tennis coach from 1984 – 1987. Phil was one of the founding members of the Weekapaug Golf Club, a member of The Gasparilla Inn Beach & Tennis Club, and a member of the Shelter Harbor Paddle Club. He also was an enthusiastic participant in the Boca Beacon Pigskin Pick ’em League.

Phil was honest and proud in all aspects of his life. He was ever modest, despite his considerable accomplishments, always greeting everyone with a smile. Phil truly loved life and was simply happy playing tennis with his daughter or his buddies.

The family extends their gratitude to Doctor Vincent Montemarano and the Westerly Hospital nurses and staff for their wonderful care and compassion.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, February 22, 2015, 2 p.m., at the Central Baptist Church, 16 Elm Street, Westerly, R.I.
