Mills takes first, Coleman takes second in Red Gill Tournament to benefit the Maritime Museum

BY MARCY SHORTUSE – Capt. Waylon Mills has been a quiet contender so far this year … at least until Sunday, May 30 when he and his team aboard Blaze took first place in the annual Red Gill Tarpon Tournament, held to benefit the Gasparilla Island Maritime Museum at Whidden’s Marina.

Team members Trey Kohrn, Nikita Rhodes and William Woodroffe released two, while the second place team with Capt. Charlie Coleman aboard the Casuarina also released two. The Boca Blue team with Capt. Sandy Melvin released the first fish, and the team aboard Hey, Moma! with Capt. Wayne Joiner released the last fish.

In all $2,000 was donated to the GIMM, and a great time was had by all at the tournament party that included a barbecue and a DJ.

There were 11 releases total. The complete release list is as follows:

The Red Gill Tarpon Tournament is one of several that will determine the captain who takes the 2021 season Jay Joiner Memorial Belt Buckle. Others include the Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament, the #17 Classic and the World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament.
