To the Editor:
It makes no sense to restrict parking while the island is still and for some time yet, being rehabilitated! The loss of revenue to the already struggling shops cannot be discounted. Hurricane damage, cost to re-open, and now parking limits? While the other area beaches and beach accesses are still being remediated and contractors are utilizing already limited parking on the island, why would parking restrictions be introduced now?
Why not re-assess once all is “back to normal?” It seems a few voices will affect the many, many other voices.
And, parking restrictions will not change poor behavior, disrespect for private property, litterbugs. Sure, they may lessen those issues but also sorely affect those who are respectful and appreciative of the singular charm of the village and beauty of the beach on Gasparilla. Address the negative behavior, Lee County.
I, for one, will change my winter plans for next year if, as a senior with a disability, I am not able to park on 14th or 11th or 10th. I will not buy pizza at Sisters, or sandwiches at Hudson’s, or take my Grandkids to Pink Pony for ice cream, or grab a burger at Miller’s, or stop at Fugate’s, or take my family to Scarpa’s, or The Temp or The Pink Elephant. Multiply that by the number of decent folks who are not yet aware of this proposed plan that may placate the few at the expense of the many.
Bad law appeals to some immediate seemingly overwhelming issue, but in the end distorts judgment.
