 To the Editor:

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently deployed its Surface Supply Dive Teams, under the leadership of Lieutenant Stuart Spoede, to search for and identify derelict vessels in the Fort Myers area following the passing of Hurricane Ian. Derelict vessels are boats that have been abandoned and left to deteriorate in the marine environment, which can pose significant hazards to navigation and the environment.

The FWC’s dive members, that have specialized training in Surface Supply Diving, were conducting searches in the affected areas to locate and assess any vessels that may have been dislodged or damaged by the hurricane so that they could be identified for removal. Regional Commander Major Rowe tasked the mission to Lieutenant Stuart Spoede, FWC’s South region surface supply team leader, to work with local authorities to identify and assist documenting any derelict vessels that are identified.

Hurricane Ian is believed to have caused significant damage to the boating infrastructure in the area and the FWC is urging boaters to exercise caution when navigating in the affected areas.

The FWC is also reminding boaters of their responsibility to properly dispose of their vessels when they are no longer viable or safe to use. Derelict vessels can be reported by calling the FWC’s toll-free hotline at (888) 404-FWCC (3922) or by visiting the FWC website.
