On Thursday, April 28 at 3:16 p.m. the Boca Grande Fire Department responded to the waters around Belcher Road, as a caller reported seeing three kayakers in distress approximately 1/2 mile off shore.

When the Department responded, they found the three kayakers being pulled out into the Gulf by the current, but they were doing their best to fight it. At one point, one of the kayakers had gone into the water but had been able to get back into the kayak.

The Fire Department took the three to the dock, and no one was injured.

Never attempt to cross the Pass, or any water at the south end, in a kayak. The current is very swift there.

The kayakers told the Fire Department they had been signaling to passing boats for some time, but no one was paying attention. If it weren’t for the sharp eyes and quick action of a guest staying at the end of Belcher Road, the events of April 28 could have been much different.
