BY JACK SHORT – The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority met on Tuesday, March 24, to hold a special board meeting immediately followed by an “attorney client session.”

Executive sessions such as the attorney-client session are not subject to normally broad public records laws, so little information is available, though a representative of the authority confirmed that the session was “held to discuss legal strategy for pending litigation.”

Attorneys Rob Berntsson and Bruce Stanley were scheduled to attend, according to the meeting agenda provided by GIBA. They are both involved in the suit against GIBA brought by Sally and Cappy Joiner over its decision to change expiration dates on toll passes.

Charlotte County’s clerk of court records show no updates to the case since an amended complaint was filed in February, other than depositions taken from the Joiners.

During the 15 minute special board meeting that preceded the executive session, Executive Director Ginger Watkins presented a report to the board containing construction-related items. Lee Major, chairman of the governance committee also addressed Casualty, D&O, and Insurance Liability renewal.
