Final hurricane debris collection Dec. 9

December 4, 2024
By Staff Report

Starting Dec. 9, debris trucks will begin their final collections for any remaining Hurricane Milton debris at the roadsides of unincorporated Lee County.

The county is asking that resident place all debris at the right-of-way by the end of the day on Sunday Dec. 8. Anything placed after final collection will not be picked up by the county’s contractor.

Tips to ensure pickup of your storm debris:

  • Set storm debris at the curb away from your normal household trash and recycling; it will be collected and documented separately.
  • Make three separate piles: appliances, yard waste and construction and demolition debris.
  • Set out storm debris only for this final push.
  • Do not place anything under low-hanging obstacles like trees or power lines.
  • Avoid stacking debris near fire hydrants and mailboxes.

Everything set at the curb must be storm-related debris. Debris crews will not collect additional material.

Debris such as concrete, lot clearing, household move-outs or reconstruction-project waste are not eligible for collection and will not be picked up by the county’s debris contractor.

Freshly cut vegetative yard waste should not be added to storm-debris piles. Freshly cut horticultural waste will be collected by your regular hauler, not the county’s debris contractor. To ensure pickup from your regular hauler, place the yard waste in a bin or paper bag; loose yard waste should be tied and bundled – no more than six feet in length and 50 pounds or less.

Residents are responsible for restoring right-of-way in front of their properties to pre-Milton appearance, including laying sod if necessary.

Report illegal dumping

Debris should not be dumped at any unauthorized location. It must also be separated into type, including sand, construction, vegetation and appliances. It should not be bagged, so crews can see the contents. If you see illegal dumping taking place, residents should call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (239) 477-1000.

Illegal dumping in a county right of way can also be reported by a Lee County Request for Action, or RFA, at leegov.com/rfa. The county also has a page devoted to debris at leegov.com/storm.
