October breast cancer awareness month was highlighted with a personal story from Kathy James and her battle and survival with breast cancer.

TEN YEARS AGO

Natalie Spurgeon competed in the Special Olympics and earned two gold medals.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

A cottage on 12 Street West had been used for fire department training exercises before it was slated to be torn down.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A beach restoration project that had been proposed 16 years earlier was approved by Lee County Commissioners. When completed the beaches were to be widened from the southern end to 19th Street.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

The kids in the Boca Grande Community Center’s After School Program toured the downtown area and sang patriotic songs at island stores.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A signing ceremony was held for the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program. The featured presenter was U.S. Senator Bob Graham. Representatives of 21 local and state agencies were present.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The last dirt road left in downtown Boca Grande, Bradley Avenue, was being prepared for paving.

FORTY YEARS AGO

The Oakland Hills Country Club became Rotonda Golf & Country Club. The name change coincided with new management of the club, dining room, current landscaping and improvement projects.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Governor Bob Graham endorsed Charlotte Harbor Committee recommendations to give priority to floodplain, stormwater runoff, drainage, wastewater regulations and wetlands/barrier island protection.
