Post-earthquake precautionary boil notice for Cole Island

June 9, 2026
By Garland Pollard

The Gasparilla Island Water Association issued a Precautionary Boil Water Notice for Cole Island and the Boca Grande North Association due to a temporary loss of water pressure during the repair of the eight inch transmission water main that brings water from their Placida treatment plant to the island storage tanks.

The break was likely caused by the small earthquake Florida experienced on June 8. Executive Director Ron Bolton told the Beacon that the pipe used was very sensitive to ground disturbance.

“Even significant changes in air temperature have been known to cause it to crack,” said Bolton.

This notice is for customers that receive their water from the within the boundary area specified above and lost water pressure.

Until the testing is completed it is advisable to bring all water used for cooking, drinking or brushing teeth to a rolling boil for one minute. Residents may use the water for bathing, laundry and irrigation. All fixtures should be run for several minutes to clear the lines in your home.

This notice will remain in effect until GIWA receive clearances from their lab for the water samples taken, and at least until Wednesday, June 10.
