Post office opening date could be delivered soon

December 12, 2024
By Staff Report

The date for the opening of the Boca Grande Post Office may be sooner than expected. While there is no official date, building owner Mark Spurgeon is now working with the maintenance and building section of the United States Postal Service in Denver on a reopening.

“They will still see some activity going on,” said Spurgeon.

While it is not tied to any reopening, windows, set for replacement after Hurricane Ian finally arrived. They have also worked on electric and water, as they share the building with Boca Grande Real Estate.

The opening will happen in 2025; the “when” is the question.

The Beacon reached out to USPS public affairs for an official date but there is not one yet.

“The Postal Service appreciates its customers and always strives to provide the best possible service to them,” said Lecia Hall, of USPS Strategic Communications. “At this time, the Postal Service is working to resume services at the Boca Grande Post Office, that was affected by Hurricane Helene and Milton and restore postal operations as soon as possible.”

She told the Beacon that when repairs have been completed, the Postal Service will make a final assessment of those facilities to ensure they are safe for re-occupancy, then a tentative date for resumption of services will be decided.

“We appreciate the patience of our valued customers as we continue to work diligently to resume postal operations in all facilities,” said Hall.

She wrote the Beacon that the public can check on the status of any facility by checking the Service Alerts page at About.usps.com.

Last week, the Beacon reported that the blue post office box would not return until the post office reopens, according to the USPS. However, a reader reported to us after publication that the blue post office box at Kappy’s, at the south end of the parking area, was active. Staff at Kappy’s confirmed that the box is still regularly picked up daily by the USPS.
