FIVE YEARS AGO

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission decided to pursue a new “sportfish” designation that would include tarpon as a catch-and-release only species.

TEN YEARS AGO

Toxins were found at the Boca Grande Community Center that included asbestos and lead. The Munchkin room was vacated, but other than that officials said the toxins didn’t “pose much of a threat.”

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Property taxes were through the roof, infuriating Boca Grande homeowners. A cat roundup was scheduled to spay and neuter island strays, and residents gathered in the rain to remember 9/11.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Everyone was talking about how strange it was not to have any hurricanes for the whole month of August, and Bowe’s Tractor Service was about to begin removal of the old seawall on the south end, primarily in front of Island House, Woodwind Beach and Boca Grande Shores condominiums.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Labor Day weekend gave residents a chance to enjoy fried mullet, all the beer they could drink and a 75-foot table filled with homemade dishes.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Charlotte County Board of Commissioners approved a proposal by Harry Durham to develop the Gasparilla Island end of the trestle into a commercial shopping area, public beach, park and marina.

Meanwhile, commissioners were also talking about a plan to dump the railroad bridge in the Gulf to make it an artificial reef.
