Many residents responding to a National Register of Historic Places proposal were against the inclusion even before the public meeting. Residents were against attracting more visitors to the island.

Boca Bargains held a fashion show at The Gasparilla Inn & Club with over 170 guests attending. 

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Boca Grande Duplicate Bridge Club Players Pat Meyer and Diane Strong came in a dead heat for player-of-the-month.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A new course record was set by Mickey Hooke for the Boca Grande 5K Run and Fun Walk. He finished the course in 17:08.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Capt. Sandy Melvin came in 20th out of 150 in the Louisiana Bassmaster Top 150 at Toledo Bend Reservoir. 

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Funding was not available for any dredging in the Charlotte Harbor Navigation Channel. Barges were having to lower their draft due to the silt in the channel.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Deputies were issuing tickets to drivers for driving on the wrong side of the road to avoid speed bumps on the causeway.

FORTY YEARS AGO

A soccer tournament was held at the Boca Grande Community Center and drew 225 players and spectators to the event. It netted about $725 for various center programs.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

GICIA was in support of a mandatory garbage collection program and was asking members to sign a petition for Lee County.
