The Historic Preservation Board vetoed supporting a nomination for a portion of the Boca Grande residential historic district to be placed on the National Register of Historical Places.

TEN YEARS AGO

The nine acres of FPL-owned land at the southern tip of the island had been cleaned, deemed safe and ready to go for development.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The bridge experienced an extended opening when a broken turnbuckle prevented the bridge from closing.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Royal Palm Players celebrated Veterans Day with a golf cart scavenger hunt sponsored by The Seale Family Realtors Inc. The winners were Patrick & Kay Carey and Jim & Leslie Miller.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

The Boca Bop triathlon was held on the island. Teams competed in swimming, running and cycling with Peter McKinney and teammate Tom Stegeman taking first place.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce members voted to proceed with caution and have the Tourism Committee design a home page for the internet.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Gasparilla Inn Marina applied for permits to reconstruct an existing dry boat storage building. Lee County rejected the plan and The Gasparilla Inn filed an appeal.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Merchants agreed to hold the annual Christmas Open House for downtown shops. Christmas caroling would be added and the Christmas Tree lighting would be a separate event.
