FIVE YEARS AGO

Big Sister, Candy of Paradise Exclusive, and Little Sister, Aaliyah, were named the top “Big and Little Sister” for the state of Florida for Big Brothers Big Sisters.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Fire Department was holding a Rib Fest to raise money in support of the local fire department and fund the Firefighters’ Pension Fund.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The Mote Marine Laboratory set up a large display in The Gasparilla Inn Beach Club parking lot. A “touch tank” was among the displays for the children of the Boca Grande Child Care Center.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Lee County Commissioners voted unanimously to create a special Boca Grande taxing district to address the island’s lizard problem. 

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

The Crowninshield Community House agreed to allow Lee County to occupy its facility on a short-term basis to the meet the needs of The Island School.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce officially joined the internet and posted a schedule of seminars for interested businesses to learn more about the world wide web.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Community Center held its annual Reading is Fun celebration with Dr. Hank Wright, Kathy Futch, Sue Shaffer and Betty Newlin. 

FORTY YEARS AGO

A shrimp boat became lodged in the flats off Little Gasparilla Island. According to residents, the boat was beginning to break up.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Mrs. Delores Jean “Dee” Shevitski was named manager of the new Boca Grande North First Bank.
