Gasparilla Island Conservation and Improvement Association kicked off its 50th year working to preserve island life with a 2021 Bike Path Safety Initiative.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Spring Book Sale at the Johann Fust Library Foundation beat all past records. The Boca Grande Firefighters Rib Feast was a huge success with roughly 275 dinners served.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The ninth annual Boca Grande Croquet Invitational was played on three Gasparilla Inn courts as well as the single court at Boca Bay. Over 30 players participated and the courts were in splendid shape.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

A tugboat moved a barge with a house on it through the bayou. The house was being transported from the Fort Myers beach area to Boca Grande to be placed on 29th Street.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Summer Godwin and his twin sister, Angel, won the blue ribbon for “The Kracker Kids” in the best group entry for the Bike Parade.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Boca Grande’s petition for flat rate fees for calls to Englewood received approval. The rate change would take effect within six months.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Charlotte County Commissioners considered an ordinance to ban septic tanks on barrier islands.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Capt. Nat Italiano performed the wedding ceremony of local metal sculptor Stuart Hoeckle to Marilyn Gustasson.

FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

“Come to the Island” was the theme for the first annual Gasparilla Island Art Festival.
