FIVE YEARS AGO

The First Annual Sandbar Music Festival was held between Pine Island and Cayo Costa.

TEN YEARS AGO

Permits and licensing had been procured for season two of the Boca Grande Farmers Market to start in October and run through April. 

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Lighthouse turned 120 years old, and the Boca Beacon Newspaper turned 30 years old.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The Annual Community Picnic was held at the Crowninshield with food provided by Hudson’s Grocery, South Beach Bar & Grille and the Boca Palms Restaurant. Activities included a slip and slide and various games for the children.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO 

Whidden’s Marina was nominated for the federal register by the State Historic Preservation Board. The application was on Lee County Historic Preservation Boards upcoming agenda.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

A six-year-old home on Little Gasparilla Island burned to the ground and was a total loss by the time firefighters got there by boat. Intermittent rain could not stop the fire but did prevent nearby homes and brush from catching fire.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

A captain was arrested and charged for the theft of fellow charter boat captain Jimmy Robertson’s Loran readings books. Robertson had 10-15 books of coordinates of the best fishing spots over the last 20 years.

FORTY YEARS AGO

Money to build a three-bedroom house at the Boca Grande ballfield for the Lee County Sheriff’s officers was put into the Lee County Budget and was awaiting approval.
