FIVE YEARS AGO

Almost two weeks without any major red tide issues was a big deal, after a period of about two years where it was terrible. 

TEN YEARS AGO

A ruling on the side of our resources. One aspect of the bottom-weighted tarpon jig saga was closed, as the FWC voted to adopt new language regarding its use in Boca Grande Pass. That ruling was, “no more.” 

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

Boca Grande firefighters were in search of a spam queen and a pilot who temporarily lost his sight crashed into the water and beach at 40th Street.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

More than 150 folks came out for the annual Boca Grande Labor Day Picnic at the Crowninshield. 

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Stop trashing the beach accesses. That was the message from island residents who lived on those streets. It wasn’t just trash, though, it was tons of landscaping debris.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Islander Johnny Johnson opened his tax bill to find that his property value had jumped by $200,000 in a single year. While some residents got some tax relief, others were flabbergasted at how much they’d be paying.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

 As controversy surrounding whether or not to dredge Stump Pass was being discussed, Englewood resident Tom Dignam said, “If that pass closes, you can kiss Englewood shellfishing goodbye. We’ve got a crisis on our hands.”
