FIVE YEARS AGO

The roster was filling up for Ladies Day, and the Boca Grande Historical Society elected Karen Grace to her second term as president.

TEN YEARS AGO

Capt. Charlie Coleman’s team took first place in the Whidden’s Back Bayu Tournament. Capt. Matt Coleman’s team took second.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

It was announced that Loons on a Limb, a favorite island restaurant owned by Jay and Sue Spurgeon, would close at the end of the month.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Thomas Gill, owner of Gill’s Grocery at the north end, sold the business to Grant and Lori Quirk of Palm Island.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Remember that big ol’ sign at the entrance to the Causeway that looked like a billboard, announcing you had arrived at Gasparilla Island? A crazy driver took it out  this week, 25 years ago, and it was never replaced.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Flooding on the road at the north end was the hot topic, leading owners of the Causeway, Gaspar, Inc., to conduct studies. It was determined that “blind drains” which had no inlet or outlet for water runoff were to blame.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Residents of the south end were evacuated by the Boca Grande Emergency Preparedness Committee. Flooding frequently plagued the port area at that time. The community donated dinner, and the displaced residents slept at the Community Center.
