FIVE YEARS AGO

The United Methodist Women of Boca Grande announced they raised $80,000 at the Strawberry Festival, which would be split among 25 charitable organizations.

TEN YEARS AGO

The Bag Lady was back at Boca Bargains, GIBA was talking about a smaller tender house and a change to catwalks, and Shana and Brittney tied the knot on Banyan Street.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

The Boca Grande Community Panel was envisioning one-way streets downtown and pedestrian parking malls, stirring controversy. The island said goodbye to Deepwater Dave Howell.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

The FPL tanks were being dismantled at the south end of the island, while County Commissioner Bob Janes said the County should help fund the land’s preservation and protection from development.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

The search for the body of one of two little girls swept out into the Gulf was downsized, as it had been two weeks since the incident occurred. They had been wading in shallow water at the lighthouse beach when the incident happened.

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Rich Caccavale, Nat Italiano and a whole team of others made spaghetti for 225 at one of their fundraiser dinners. More than $7,000 was raised for the James Vann family.

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

Charlotte County ordered an investigation of the Boca Grande Causeway to determine what they could do to force the owner to maintain the bridge. Approval was received from the Army Corps of Engineers for 48 railroad cars to be dumped in the Gulf just off our coast to create the coast’s largest reef (at that time).
