The Boca Grande Community Center named a large room on the east wing the Dee Wheeler Multi-Purpose Room after the woman who created numerous programs for the children and community.
TEN YEARS AGO
The first-ever Kids Classic Interactive Art Festival was held for children and families. Ten artists were on site with their work to exhibit and interact with the children.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
Islander Mike Giobbe won silver and bronze medals in the National Veterans Golden Age Games which were held in Hawaii.
TWENTY YEARS AGO
Workmen began taking out the concrete wall surrounding the tennis courts at the Boca Grande Community Center. The courts were being relocated to Wheeler Road to make way for construction of The Island School addition.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
The Boca Grande Causeway was inadvertently renamed to Gasparilla Cswy by Charlotte County when new signage was installed.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
The Bridge Authority bill became a law after being presented to the governor and cabinet for review. Amendments would need to be addressed.
THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
The Jaws of Life were officially presented to the Boca Grande Fire Department by Nat Italiano who generously donated the lifesaving equipment.
FORTY YEARS AGO
The Boca-Rotonda Airport Corporation was formed to save the Rotonda Airport.
FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
A safe stolen from Barnichol Hardware had been recovered from the waters off the south end of the Island along with a gun that had been in the safe. The safe, unfortunately, was empty.
