The “Elusive Tiger Shad” team took top honors at Ladies Day, with “Let’s Go Fishin”’ in second. Dian McKeithan Miller, youngest daughter of the last keeper of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, passed away.

FIFTEEN YEARS AGO

A humpback whale was spotted in local waters. Dave McHugh resigned from the Boca Grande Community Panel after declaring the panel was pushing an agenda the public didn’t want.

TWENTY YEARS AGO

Local guides went on the offensive, launching a campaign against the “jiggers” who were using unethical practices and hurting the tarpon.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

An osprey dropped a fish on power lines, creating an outage that left 2,500 people without power for six hours. 

THIRTY YEARS AGO

Budweiser announced a “partial” sponsorship for the World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament, and the Royal Palm Players performed their last play of the season, “The Road to Ruin.”

FORTY YEARS AGO

The first tarpon of the 1983 season was caught – an 80 pounder. Gaspar, Inc., the company that used to own the causeway, announced that bridge buyers wanted to make their purchases with revenue bonds.
