The Boca Grande Community Center hosted its first Youth Fishing Tournament of the year on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Boca Grande Fishing Pier. The weather was beautiful and the fishing was consistent. The kids hooked a bunch of mangrove snapper, grouper, spotted seatrout and even a nice size nurse shark. More than 40 children participated in the event.
The minimum catch size was 8-inches and every fish caught was measured and released. Prizes and awards were given out in various age categories, and raffle prizes were given out as well. The prizes included tackle boxes, bait buckets and rod and reel sets.
Joe Wier, Supervisor for Lee County Parks & Recreation, said the tournaments would not be possible without the support of the Boca Beacon, Barnichol Hardware, Charlotte County Parks & Recreation for the use of the pier and Boca Grande Marina for all of the live shrimp.
The next Youth Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016. For more information about the tournaments, contact Joe Wier at 964-2564.
