Richard Gerard Newman, 49, of Rotonda West passed away peacefully on August 23, 2015 with his family surrounding him.

Richard was born in October 8, 1965 in Los Angeles, California, the son of the late Joan Barry Newman. He graduated from Palm Springs High School and was employed by the Department of Environmental Protection as a park ranger for Don Pedro Island and surrounding barrier islands since 1999. Prior to that he was employed by The Gasparilla Inn Marina.

Richard will always be remembered as a loving husband and proud father of Andrew Newman. His sister, Patty, remembers all the summers together growing up in Colorado and spending time together in the surrounding nature.

Richard was always concerned with family and always the first to ask how his brother, Kevin, in Utah was doing during the cold winter months while Richard was spending time outdoors in the warm Florida weather. Richard loved being the grillmaster at all family affairs.

Richard loved to tell stories of his encounters with the wildlife and the many humans in the park. You could always find him outside, golfing with his friends and family. You would also see him early in the morning, boating to work at Don Pedro Island.

Faith, family and friends were most dear to his heart and buddy hugs were a constant with his son, Andrew.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Devery Newman; his son, Andrew Gerard Newman; his sister, Patty Seidensticker; his brother, Kevin Newman; niece Lisa Seidensticker; nephews Joseph Seidensticker, Patrick Seidensticker, Alec Newman and Shane Newman; Nancy’s supportive family; and other extended family.

Services in his honor will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 11 a.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at The Amory Chapel, located within Gasparilla Island State Park at the south end of the island.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL, 34238; or the Barrier Island Parks Society, P.O. Box 637, Boca Grande, FL 33921; or First Step of Sarasota, 4579 Northgate Court, Sarasota, FL. 34234.

A Florida Uniform Transfers to Minor Act Account has been set up for Richard’s son Andrew’s education at Englewood Bank and Trust, P.O. Box 1963, Boca Grande, FL 33921.

The family wishes to thank all who extended their care and concern during this difficult time. We especially wish to thank the Tampa General Hospital staff and the palliative care team there, as well as Tidewell Hospice nurses and staff for their wonderful dedicated care. They are angels without wings.
