Water service was interrupted for most of the island for several hours on Thursday, Aug. 6. As of 3 p.m., water pressure had been restored, though a boil-water notice will be in effect for at least the weekend.
Bonnie Pringle of Gasparilla Island Water Association said their contractors were performing sewer repairs, when they compromised a water main that does not appear on any of GIWA’s maps.
Because they could not identify what parts of the water system were feeding into that main and because the spill had begun to flood the sewer system, GIWA was forced to shut off the pumps to the entire island, with the exception of Boca Grande North, whose water is supplied by directly by the water plant.
A worker on scene who did not identify himself said they hoped to complete work by tomorrow afternoon, possibly referring to the total project and repairs.
On Thursday several island establishments had already closed for lack of water. Most opened again on Friday, even though they had to boil their water.
