She was born June 6th, 1931, daughter of John and Katherine (Shelton) Bindloss of Stonington, CT. Shelley grew up in Stonington and attended Mrs. Taylor’s One Room School, Stoneleigh Burnham School, Colby Sawyer College, and The Museum of Fine Arts School. In 1952, she married William Blunt (Bill) White of Mystic, CT.
They were happily married for 64 years. Shelley was an active woman who enjoyed traveling, the outdoors, sailing, skiing, and adventuring with Bill, and bird-watching with friends.
She was an active volunteer with local organizations including Calvary Church, the Westerly Center for the Arts, the Lyman Allen Art Museum, and the Thames Science Center. She loved to cook, to entertain, and to take care of family and friends. Whether at home or at sea, she always had special grace and showed great caring. Together Shelley and Bill made their life in Stonington CT.
When Bill retired in 1986 they purchased an additional home in Boca Grande, Florida where they had a full life for 18 years. They made many new friends and enjoyed visits from family and their northern friends. In her later years, Shelley struggled with Alzheimer’s and she and Bill returned full time to Stonington.
The family would like to give very special thanks to her many kind caregivers. Shelley is survived by her husband Bill of Stonington and their two children, Blunt White, and his wife Nancy of Stonington, and Kassy White of Dover MA and Stonington.
She is also survived by her 5 grandchildren: Will White, Katie White Lorenz, Will MacKay, Morgan Mackay, and Christopher MacKay. Shelley was predeceased by her brother William (Bill) Bindloss of Wilmington DE, and her sister Joan Bindloss Humphreys of Pompano Beach FL.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held on January 28 at the Calvary Episcopal Church in Stonington at 11:00am. Internment will be private. Shelley had deep roots in Stonington and a great love for the community. Donations in her honor may be made to the LaGrua Center 32 Water Street, Stonington, CT 06378.
