BY MARCY SHORTUSE – Robert F. Shandorf, age 68, of St. Paul, MN and Boca Grande, FL died unexpectedly on 8/5/15. Bob was born May 10, 1947 in Minneapolis.

He attended Campion High School in Wisconsin, Holy Cross College in Massachusetts, earned an MA in English from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, and did postgraduate work in religion and literature at the University of Chicago. After living several years in Chicago, Bob returned to the Twin Cities and taught American and British literature at Convent of the Visitation School until 2004. He is preceded in death by parents James and Catherine Shandorf, and survived by wife Dianna, son Matthew, sister Susan Shandorf, brother Tom (Mariagrazia), nephew James and niece Emily.

Bob was passionate about literature, particularly that of American 20th century writers. Over his many years of teaching he received hundreds of letters and other expressions of gratitude from his students for opening their minds to the power of great works of fiction and poetry. His favorite novel was The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and he was honored to work on the planning committee for St. Paul’s Centennial Fitzgerald Celebration in 1996.

He loved to be outdoors, especially on water. Summers included many trips to the North Shore, the Gunflint Trail and northern Wisconsin. During the winters in Boca Grande, FL, Bob found new, deep friendships and enjoyed participating in the Literature Forum. He loved the simple pleasures of a walk on the beach, a great meal, good friends, and well-written books. Above all he cherished his family, proud and grateful to be a husband and father.

A memorial gathering of family, friends, former students and colleagues was held on August 11, in the garden at their home in Minnesota.
