BY JACK SHORT - On Thursday, April 25 incoming president and CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory Dr. Michael Crosby opened the last in a series of five lectures outlining the directives central to the Mote/Boca Grande partnership, a presentation about snook and tarpon stock enhancement.

The Boca Grande BGs tennis team donated their winnings from the Charlotte County Women’s Tennis League Tournament to the Boca Grande Child Care Center this year. The team placed second in their division.

BY LIZA STROUT - The date is set. Plotting and planning are underway. The second Hammerhead Adventure Run will be held on Aug. 10, and the devious minds that brought you last year’s “Shark Tank” are hard at work to make things a bit more … interesting … this year.

Last Saturday, Beacon writers Liza Strout and Jack Short were treated to a kayak ecotour by Barrier Island Parks Society. The trip started at Don Pedro landbase, continued on Don Pedro Island, along the beach and through a mangrove tunnel into a lagoon.  

The results of the Florida Press Association’s 2012 Better Weekly Newspaper Contest are in, and the staff at the Boca Beacon will once again be bringing home awards in multiple categories. This year, the Boca Beacon was the only island publication to win awards, 13 in total.

The Boca Grande Community Center hosted its last Youth Fishing Tournament of the season on Saturday, May 4 at the Boca Grande Fishing Pier. The weather was beautiful and a lot of families came out to enjoy the day.
