Reference Room, Fust Library to combine forces

Read more...When we heard of a plan to combine the Lee County Reference Room with the Johann Fust Community Library, we asked the Fust Library’s Vice President, Alice Gorman, for her input. This article was written by her, and represents information from both librarys’ staff.

BY ALICE GORMAN - Everyone in Boca Grande loves the Johann Fust Community Library. The building, with its gracious gardens on 10th Street that was given to our community by the Roger Amory family, is an institution that has continued to be a place of serenity and literary resources since 1949.

Last winter, the board circulated a survey in front of the Boca Grande Post Office that asked the community for its thoughts and opinions on our library system. The results that came back gave us a clear path to the answer to the problem.

BY LIZA STROUT - The 2012 Taste of Boca was held in a tent this year, and that’s a really good thing. Half an hour before the sun set, a double rainbow appeared over Charlotte Harbor. It was the perfect omen for an evening of good food, fun, and wonderful music.

Alzamora’s ‘Sisyphus’ etchings to be displayed at Victoria & Albert Museum

Read more...BY MARCY SHORTUSE - There aren’t many among us who haven’t felt like Sisyphus at one time or another. The king of Greek mythology who was banished to a fate of rolling a huge boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, for eternity is a metaphor for many things.

Some say he represents the sun, which rises in the east every day and sets in the west. Others say it signifies man’s endless struggle on the earth.

Legendary artist Mariana Alzamora, whose name is well-known in Boca Grande, has recently been honored by the Victoria and Albert Museum of London for her series of etchings titled “Sisyphus Redeemed.” Recently the museum added seven of the etchings to their collection.
