He was born November 1, 1931 in Grand Rapids. Doug enlisted and proudly served in the United States Navy from 1952-1956 aboard the USS Sigourney destroyer.
Returning from duty he went to work in the family-owned frozen food business Sysco Frost Pack. He served as company president until his retirement in 1984.
Doug was a man of many interests and hobbies. He had a love of hunting, boating and fishing. Doug and his wife, Barbara, spent many summers boating from their home on Lake Charlevoix, Mich. through the waters of the Great Lakes.
Doug’s passion for boating earned him the title “Captain Doug” with his family and friends. He was happiest in the duck marsh and fishing in the backwaters of Boca Grande.
For more than 30 years, Doug and Barbara made their winter home in Boca Grande. Doug served as one of the original “Pancake Flippers” at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church of Boca Grande. Doug is survived by the love of his life, wife Barbara.
A memorial service will take place on May 3 at 11 a.m. at Mayflower Congregational Church, Grand Rapids.
In lieu of flowers please consider contributions to Hospice of Michigan, or the The Lighthouse United Methodist Church of Boca Grande.
