Robert D. Burton, M.D. passed away peacefully on February 15, 2013. He had suffered a heart attack in early November from which he never fully recovered.

Bob was born on December 16, 1927 in Holland, Mich. where he grew up. He attended Hope College and University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency in otolaryngology. He did his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital and lived in Grand Rapids for over 50 years.

Robert was a Michigan delegate to the AMA, president of the Kent County Medical Society, and president of the Michigan State Medical Society. He took great satisfaction with his accomplishments as chairman of the Michigan Coalition for Safety Belt Use.

Bob had many interests and activities that he pursued with enthusiasm. From a young age he played the cornet in many bands and genres from Big Band to Dixieland, performing as recently as last summer with the Calder City Orchestra. He was a board member of the Grand Rapids Symphony. He was also a founding board member of the Grand Forum.

Bob was an avid tennis player and enjoyed bicycling and skiing. He shared his passion for fishing with his children and grandchildren.

He and his wife, Nella, traveled worldwide with family and friends. His travel included volunteering for medical missions and archaeological expeditions. Bob and Nella spent many wonderful winters in Boca Grande, where they had close friends and were often visited by family.

He will be greatly missed by his wife, Nella, of 59 years.

He is survived by three children: Mary (Todd Nelp), Bob (Julie Yen) and Jim (Anne Murphy); and six grandchildren, Taylor, Wil, Evan, Sarah, Patrick and Katie.

Bob was cheerful with an optimistic outlook. He always had a smile and a story to share.

A memorial service was held Saturday, Feb. 23 at Mayflower Congregational Church, 2345 Robinson Rd. SE, Grand Rapids.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Interlochen Fund or a charity of your choice.  For more information go to metcalfandjonkhoff.com.
