Obituary: Gregory J. Magratten

Gregory J. Magratten, 88, of Pinehurst and formerly of Boca Grande, passed away on January 16, 2013 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital. Greg was born in Hastings on Hudson, N.Y. on January 24,1924.  

He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 on Air Sea Rescue aboard the USS Papago in Pearl Harbor and the Atlantic.

Under the V-12 program, he graduated from Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y.  Later, he attended Columbia University for graduate studies.

In 1949, Greg married Dorothy Russell in the Chapel at Hobart College. They were married for 65 years and had three children. They lived in Bronxville, N.Y., Williamson, N.Y., Penn Yan, N.Y., Newark, N.Y., New London, N.H., Boca Grande, St. John, USVI and most recently, Pinehurst, N.C.

Greg was senior partner in the Wellisch/Magratten Agency for 34 years. He also served on the boards of the Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and Myers Community Hospital in upstate New York.  
Greg was a Senior Warden in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Newark, N.Y. During his retirement, Greg founded and was director of the Boca Grande Men’s Club. He also served as director on the boards of the Boca Grande Health Clinic and Gasparilla IslandWater Board.

Greg enjoyed golfing and was a member of the Lake Sunapee Country Club, Lemon Bay Country Club and the Country Club of North Carolina.

After moving to Pinehurst in 2008, Greg and Dorothy were members of the Trinity Christian Fellowship Church. Dorothy especially wishes to convey her deepest appreciation for the devotion and support of Trinity’s members.

Greg is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three children, Gary Magratten of California, Darcy Magratten and Brooks Magratten of Rhode Island; and three granddaughters, Anne Marie, Cotton and Colby.

Greg’s family wish to express their gratitude for the professional and compassionate care provided by the Moore County EMS and First Health’s Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit.

There will be a private family memorial service in the chapel on Keuka Lake, NY.

Greg will be lovingly remembered as always being on the sunny side of the street. He enjoyed everyone he met and spread good cheer wherever he went.
