Daniel Patrick (Dany) Magill, 56, of Englewood passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, June 17, 2012.

Dany was born on February 4, 1956 in Berwyn, Illinois but spent most of his childhood on Siesta Key in Sarasota. Dany Magill was always his own man. He got his first job at age 13 and never looked back. In spite of partial paralysis, he continued to work until his retirement three years ago. Dany was an entrepreneur from the beginning.

Just a teenager, Dany left Sarasota to begin his career as a contractor in North Carolina. At age 20, he fell from a second floor and injured his spine causing the paralysis. When released from the hospital and rehab, Dany was determined to live his life to the fullest, and he refused to let the disability define him.

Dany returned to Florida and continued to work in the construction industry. In short order, he was working as Project Manager on large projects throughout the state. Eventually, he began his own businesses specializing in design, construction and management of large projects. Dany spent over twenty years working in Boca Grande. His projects included The Boca Bay Pass Club, the fire station renovation of the Boca Bay Power House, and the original condominiums in the Boca Bay Project and the reconstruction after Hurricane Charlie. His most recent companies were Dany Magill, Inc. in Englewood and Boca Grande Design, Inc. at Boca Grande.

Sailing was Dany’s passion. In his life, he owned two beautiful sailboats and he took each on a year-long trip throughout the Caribbean and South America. Each time he manned the helm by himself. Dany truly enjoyed the people he met on those trips. The more disadvantaged the people, the more he cared about them. He also enjoyed living on his sail boats while working in Boca Grande with favorite moorings in Boca Grande and Lemon Bay in Englewood. When his health would no longer allow him to work in construction, Dany retired to Englewood. He rested for a short time before building a beautiful wooden skiff by himself. The Bella Jane.

Dany was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Magill and Lily Ann Edwards. He leaves behind three siblings, brothers William J. (Bill) Magill, Jr. of Englewood and Lawrence J. (Larry) Magill and wife Betsy of Sarasota, and sister Kathleen A. (Kathy) Magill and husband Tom Mastin of Fort Valley, Georgia. He also leaves a nephew Hank Jacob (Dixie) of Crawfordville, Florida; two nieces Sarah Magill and Christine Magill of Sarasota, and a nephew James Magill of Sarasota. And Dany leaves a devoted and beloved best friend, Jane Beaudry, of Englewood.

A Memorial Service will be held to celebrate Dany’s life on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 12:00 noon at Lemon Bay Funeral Home in Englewood, Florida. The family will continue the celebration afterwards at Dany’s home at 520 Perry Street in Englewood. A private scattering ceremony will take place at a later date. In honor of Dany, please consider a donation for relief for the people of Haiti whom Dany loved dearly (redcross.org or other) or a charity of your choice.
