To the Editor:
John Heagney says in the Aug. 23, 2013 edition of the Boca Beacon, “Unlike some who would like to silence diverse opinion, we encourage all residents selected as part of the poll to answer questions and address them so that their opinions will be recorded.”
Just because you disagree with somebody else’s opinion doesn’t mean you want to silence theirs.
My wife and I finally received the poll. Question one asks if you own property in Boca Grande. If not, end the survey.
This silences any stakeholder who has an opinion but doesn’t own property on the island. It silences the person who works here, rents here, shops here or visits here. The poll uses scare tactics by pointing at hypothetical situations (should Lee County give land to the Inn), and it uses diversionary tactics (how do you feel about green space?).
In short, it pushes the polled person in one direction.
Guarantee the island’s future today? Isn’t the business community part of our future? Isn’t the success of the Inn part of our future?
Being a posh zip code is not a future for everyone.
Picture Boca Grande without a vibrant business community. Think back 35 years ago when plywood was covering windows in stores downtown. Now imagine what would happen to your precious property values without the village.
It could be the beginning of the end.
