To the Editor,
It is a very hot Sunday afternoon about 1:45 p.m. on June 2. I am a security guard for Boca Grande Isles, a gated community on the island. While on patrol through BGI, I came upon an adult brown pelican standing in the middle of the road. I knew it was in trouble. Pelicans do not stand in the middle of a hot asphalt road. They fly, are on the water or nesting in the mangroves. I quickly returned to the guardhouse to make a call to Florida Wildlife.
As I was dialing the phone number, I saw a deputy sheriff cruiser driving towards the guardhouse. The officer driving was Deputy Sheriff Angelo Lanni. I told him about the injured pelican. He offered to drive to where I last saw the pelican and I followed in my car.
After assessing the situation, Deputy Sheriff Lanni decided that the best way to handle the pelican was to place him in a cage. He did not have one but offered to drive to the Parks Department on the island in the hopes that they would have one. He arrived a short time later with Jacques Boudreau.
Apparently, Jacques is affiliated with Wildlife Center of Venice, and knew what to do. In no time at all, they caged the pelican. This pelican was huge. Jacques brought him to the Wildlife Center for treatment of a broken wing.
How lucky can this pelican be when you have two caring individuals like Deputy Sheriff Lanni and Jacques working on the island. They both knew what to do to help this badly injured pelican.
A great big thank you to Deputy Sheriff Angelo Lanni and Jacques for your concern.
