Letter to the Editor: Surfers ask community for support

Boca Grande island kids Nikki Heimann, David Miller and Mila Wyman, are attending Florida Atlantic University.

Last year the FAU Surf Club competed with schools from all over the U.S. and qualified for nationals in California. They had to raise all the money themselves, and it was because of local businesses that they were able to make it to the East Coast Championships. They took third place, and in California they placed eighth in the nation.

The team just finished this season of touring with South Florida Surfers for Autism. These events teach autistic children how to surf, and much more.There have been many instances in which autistic children have started to vocalize to their parents for the first time after their surfing experience. Even two or three-world sentences, in some cases, are truly remarkable. Pediatric neurologists are attending these events and studying the results. The events include the whole family, and any autistic or special needs child, and truly do a great service for them. For more information go to www.surfersforautism.org.

This year the Florida Atlantic University Surf Club is looking for businesses to sponsor the team in order to help pay for some of the costs not covered by the university. Your donation will help enable the FAU Surf Team to travel to competitions and compete against other universities.

In return, we will include you logo on our team banner, t-shirts, any event’s marketing media. All nine team member’s surfboards which will be seen by university students, local residents, all contest/championship attendees, and viewers of Fox College Sports Net (national competitions will be broadcasted).

This is a great opportunity to get your name out there and help out some local college students. Any amount is appreciated, and checks must be made out to Collin Grimm (FAU Surf Club/Team President).

With your help they will be able to travel to our contests and championships, which are in New Smyrna and Salt Creek, Calif.
