SUBMITTED BY THE BOCA GRANDE GARDEN CLUB – The The Boca Grande Garden Club is so pleased to announce that world-renowned floral designer Michael Gaffney, who currently has 13 design schools across the country, and frequently appears on HGTV, The Today Show, and Good Morning America, will be our featured speaker and floral demonstrator at next week’s meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. in the Community Center Auditorium. He will be speaking on “Demystifying Floral Design,” sharing some of his best, step-by-step, and fast techniques to producing professional looking floral arrangements.
In his design schools, he teaches flower design from the ground up, and has taught hundreds of designers including celebrities Cicely Tyson, Harvey Fierstein, Jennifer Aniston and Natalie Portman. He will again be the featured designer at Macy’s Flower Show and will also be the main presenter in April at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Not only will he be our February speaker, but he will be teaching two sold-out workshops on February 4.
Once upon a time, Michael Gaffney worked away in a cubicle on Wall Street. Overworked and uninspired, he didn’t really know how unsatisfied he was until one day, on a visit to his Midwest hometown, he stepped into a flower shop.
“I realized how much flowers can affect a person,” he said. “They’re part of every stage of life – birth, death, weddings, funerals, memories, romance. And I saw how good designs make a stronger impact. Suddenly, I wanted to be part of that. I saw floral design as a way to help people renew, recover, express sympathy, fall in love, and share friendship. And in doing that, I understood that I could actually make a good living, doing something I love, while adding beauty and flair to events that touch people’s lives.”
Michael has now been in the floral design business for over 25 years. When he returned to New York from his hometown, he took a part-time job delivering flowers, and was asked to step in and put together some flowers. He watched and learned and figured a way to simplify the process with amazing results. He is the author of “Design Star: Lessons from the New York School of Design” and the soon-to-be released “Flower Power: Lessons from the Los Angeles School of Design.”
Michael believes flower design is as much architecture as it is art—and every design has a formula. When you follow his simple formulas you are pretty much guaranteed to have beautiful flower designs. He will be demonstrating these tried and true principles at the meeting to create beautiful arrangements that will be raffled off. Tickets will be on sale for $5 each before the meeting starts, so come early! Buy lots of tickets!
This presentation is free to Garden Club members and open to the public on a space available basis for a fee of $30.
