When firefighters arrived, by water and by land, they found a boat with three people onboard set far back into the mangroves. They reported they were not injured.
Boca Grande Fire Department Marine 231 (the fire boat) waited until Florida Fish and Wildlife officers arrived on the scene, at which time they handed the call over to them.
According to FWC reports, the boat operator was taking the vessel back to where it is kept at Gasparilla Marina, and the vessel was being operated on plane in an idle speed zone. The operator claimed he swerved to avoid another boat, and ended up in the mangroves. The vessel had to be removed by a towing service.
FWC reports show that the investigation is ongoing, but at this time there is no evidence of drugs or alcohol being involved in the incident.
Ultimately, the boat operator could face citations or criminal charges for improper lookout, reckless operation and/or operating the vessel at an improper speed.
