Walker takes the Bush trip, Nielsen wins Hume talk, $225,000 raised for Clinic Foundation

DSC_5638BY MARCY SHORTUSE – Island resident Daly Walker and a few of his close friends will be taking the “big” trip to Texas this year to meet former President George W. Bush, have a little lunch and tour the president’s museum … to the tune of $75,000.

Walker outbid all competitors at the Hank Wright Live and Silent Auction held on Wednesday, April 8, at the Gasparilla Inn Beach Club. There were five live auction prizes up for bid, as well as 75 silent auction prizes.

Another island resident, Dick Nielsen, won a dinner party and political commentary for 60 people at the Gasparilla Inn and Club with Brit Hume. His bid on that prize was $40,000.

Other live auction prizes included a stay in a Sarasota condo owned by Bayne Stevenson, which went for approximately $1,000. A William Storck original painting was won with a bid of $5,500, and a dinner for 24 including cocktails at Bill and Becky Deupree’s home went for $7,500.

The fifth live auction prize, a duplicate bridge game and lunch for 80 in the Gulf Room of The Gasparilla Inn & Club, was bid out at a whopping $15,000.

“We are always grateful when people come out and support the Clinic Foundation,” said Mary Anne Hastings, the executive director of the Boca Grande Health Clinic Foundation. “We have a fantastic community who gave a great response to the prizes we offered.”

Hastings said she estimated that when numbers are added up for both the auction night and the golf tournament, approximately $225,000 will have been raised for the Boca Grande Health Clinic Foundation.

The Hank Wright Golf Tournament will be held on Friday, April 10, at the Lemon Bay Golf Club. Registration and breakfast is at 8 a.m. and the tournament begins at 9 a.m. Sorry to all interested golfers, as the tournament is full.
