Kids Classic delivers excitement with 15 tarpon released

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - Jacob Newcomb is just a little guy, but when he got a hold of the first tarpon in the Gasparilla Island Kids Classic last Saturday, he turned into a manly megalops hunter. Believe it or not, the 9-year-old got his fish to the boat in just one minute, making him the first angler to catch a fish in the tournament.

Tarpon weekend brings with it record-breaking bridge traffic

BY LIZA STROUT - Whether it was tarpon or just the holiday weekend, the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority saw a surge in traffic Thursday through Monday, beating last year’s numbers for the same weekend by more than 1,100 vehicles.

Reference Room closing this week, re-opening at Fust

BY MARCY SHORTUSE - When closing time at the Lee County Reference Room comes on Wednesday, June 6, a chapter will close in the annals of Boca Grande history, and only memories will remain.
It is the last scheduled day for the Reference Room to be open, prior to its move to combine with the Johann Fust Community Library at Gasparilla Road and 10th Street.

Apparently something not-so-nice has happened. This captain’s chair, which was won by Capt. Babe Darna in the World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament, never made it to him the night of the awards.
