The day was overcast when the boats carrying seven island children reached the Pass just after 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 18, and things started off a little slowly.
The first catch was at 9:32 a.m., by Hannah Amen on the Momma Leslie with Capt. Dickie Coleman and fishing partner Anabelle Coleman.
At 10:40 a.m. Marissa Nebel brought in a shark estimated to weigh 300 pounds. She was on the Casuarina with Capt. Charlie Coleman, fishing with Sammy “Swaggy” J. Steyer. Then Wyatt Steyer caught a quick trio, two groupers and a shark. The fishes were released at 11:01, 11:07 and 11:27 a.m. from the Hey, Moma! with Capt. Wayne Joiner.
Abbie Turner and Marshall Locke paired up on the Jill Marie with Capt. Dave Chatham.View More images >>
Wyatt took home first, Marissa took home second and Hannah won for the first release of the tournament, which is third place.
The big thrill of the event was when Abbie Turner hooked up a shark. After fighting it for almost 45 minutes, everyone in sight was shocked to see the shark jump up out of the water and spin – not once, but twice.
It threw the hook on the second jump so it didn’t count as a release, but everyone cheered (more like screamed) just the same. The same happened with the second shark.
There was one tarpon hooked, but it ran screaming for its life. No official release.
