Summer sea turtle nesting season is going well on Gasparilla Island. The newly formed Boca Grande Sea Turtle Conservancy has started strong, and all eight zones on the beach are being patrolled every day. The volunteer patrollers are recording and marking new nests, false crawls and hatches daily.
They need more volunteers to cover days off and vacations, and also welcome you to patrol with them just for fun. They will count the hatched and unhatched eggs and pips and forward that information to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for inclusion in statewide statistics. If you’d like to volunteer or observe, call Grace Harvey at 964-5642.
