The Boca Beacon, Boca Grande’s locally-owned newspaper for 33 years, has purchased the Gasparilla Gazette. The purchase agreement with Breeze Newspapers of Cape Coral was made final this week.
What this means for our readers is that there will still be two island newspapers coming out on different days of the week, but they will both be owned by Dusty Hopkins, owner of the Boca Beacon, and be written and produced by the Beacon staff.
The Beacon staff will also be putting out Gasparilla Magazine on a monthly basis. Look for changes in that publication coming soon.
“The Gasparilla Gazette has been an island publication which first appeared in 1954,” Hopkins said. “We plan to utilize both publications to help our advertisers, and to better inform our readers. We feel that together, the Beacon and the Gazette can offer a complimentary mix of news, photos and island happenings.”
The first issue for the Gazette under new ownership will be Tuesday, June 25, and its weekly publication day will be Tuesday.
Subscribers to the Gazette should not notice any changes in their delivery, but any questions or problems can be directed to the Beacon office, 964-2995.
The Beacon will maintain its own web site as well as the Gazette web site, which is still a work in progress.
