BY LIZA STROUT - When Mila Wyman and the rest of the Florida Atlantic University’s Surf Team finished one point off first place in the 2013 National Scholastic Surfing Association’s East Coast Regional Championship in April, they knew that they were going to be heading to California for the national competition.
The only question was funding. Entry for the team is $1,000, and that doesn’t cover airfare, car rental, food or a hotel.
The team managed to raise 6o percent of the costs through donations, and most of that support came from Boca Grande.
Mila’s father, Jimbo Wyman, got a call from his daughter when the team reached the airport in Houston a few days ago.
“They are all pumped up,” he said. “It’s just crazy. I don’t think she slept at all last night.”
The national competition starts Saturday, June 15, and runs through June 20.
Mila herself received second place overall in the women’s regional collegiate division, which includes surfers from schools along the entire east coast of the United States.
