After a multi-year drought, 21 tarpon were caught last year in an exciting Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament.
First place in the 2012 Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament went to Team Hudson’s. The team, with Capt. Charlie Coleman manning the Casuarina, managed to bring in and release four of the silver kings. Emily Wise had a series of firsts that day – her first time tarpon fishing, her first tournament and, with the fourth catch, her first tarpon.
The prizes for each member of the first-place team are a $200 Aqua Boutique gift certificate, a tarpon pendant from Barbara Anne’s, a massage from All About You Salon and individual trophies from Englewood Glass & Mirror. The captain will receive a YETI cooler from the Barnichol.
The second-place team members will receive jewelry from Angie Mills, gift baskets from James Griffith Salon along with trophies from Englewood Glass & Mirror. Dolphin Cove will be giving a box of cigars to the captain of the second-place boat.
The individual angler with the most releases will win a limited edition framed print of the official Ladies Day poster by local artist Kelly Reark and a silver tarpon necklace from Chantique Designs by Stephanie Ryder.
The fun starts at the Friday night captain’s meeting at the Crowninshield Community House from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday night.
Fishing starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday and ends at 7 p.m., followed by a celebration at the Crowninshield Community House. Dinner is from 8 to 9:30 p.m., and the awards and Spirit Prize will be handed out at 8:45 p.m.
The raffle prize drawing will be at 9 p.m., and the party continues until 11 p.m.
“We’re looking forward to the 23rd anniversary of the Ladies’ Day Tarpon Tournament,” said Lew Hastings, executive director of the Chamber. “The committee has done a spectacular job this year to make it like no other tournament before it."
