Lighthouse lighting, Handel and ladies ‘wrapping’ in the park

Festive is becoming “the” word on the island, as it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, join everyone at The Sidebar (next to The Temptation Restaurant) for a free wine tasting from 4 to 6 p.m. The wines of Sancerre, Bordeaux and more will be sampled. As always, these wines will be available for purchase with one-day-only pricing. After your purchase, have dinner at The Temp and receive a 10% discount off your meal.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, the annual lighting of the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse celebration will take place at 6 p.m. The actual lighting is scheduled for 6:15 p.m.

On Sunday, Dec. 9 St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will host “Handel’s Messiah” at 4 p.m.

The performance will feature strings, a harpsichord and four vocalists.

 

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life team from Hudson’s Grocery will hold a barbecue on that same Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the park next to Hudson’s.
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be served.

On Monday, Dec. 10 the Boca Grande Health Clinic Physician’s Lecture Series will discuss atrial fibrillation. Dr. James Landis of Florida Cardiac Consultants will lead the discussion in the Woman’s Club Room at the Boca Grande Community Center. It will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. The cost is free.

Also On December 10 a National Theatre Live production of “Timon of Athens” will be held at 7 p.m. in the Boca Grande Community Center Auditorium. Tickets are $20. The Literature Forum will present “Wing Shooters” by Nina Revoyr on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

On Friday, Dec. 14, there will be a “Christmas Caroling by Hayride” event from 6 to 8 p.m.

It will start at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church and will travel around Boca Grande, ending at the church with cider and donuts.

The first Yappy Hour of the year will be held next to Dolphin Cove on Friday, Dec. 14 from 5 to 8 p.m. Bring any well-behaved animals and family for a complimentary wine tasting, free dog treats, “Cats n Dogs” merchandise, the Woof Gang Bakery gang, jewelry, Yappy Hour T-shirts and pet portraits by Kelly (Reark) Borza.

Don’t forget, the Loose Caboose is accepting unwrapped toys in their drop-off bin at the restaurant.
Make your donations by Friday, Dec. 14. You can also make checks out to “Toys for Tots” and drop them off inside the restaurant.

On Sunday, December 16 the Hudson’s Relay for Life team will hold a gift-wrapping session from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the park. BYOB (bring your own boxes) if possible. Donations for the team will be cheerfully accepted.

The annual food drive by the Boca Grande United Methodist Church is also in full swing. It will run through December 15. Barrels are around town at locations such as the Methodist Church and the Boca Grande Post Office. You can also make monetary donations at Hudson’s Grocery. Call the Methodist Church at 964-2479.
