BY LIZA STROUT - The Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority announced at a special meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15 that traffic would be taken down to one lane in mid-January, and would continue to be one lane until mid-February.
Traffic will be directed with signals, rather than flagmen, as the road will be single lane around the clock.
A report by J.P. Donoghue, project manager for fixed bridge construction, on how to best manage the upcoming lane closure on the south bridge met with consternation when numbers showed that there is actually more traffic crossing the bridge in the month of March than in January and February.
“More people may be on the island,” said David Hayes, chairman of the GIBA board, “but they are spending their time downtown and on the island, not crossing the bridges.”
