BY LIZA STROUT - While there were many decisions made and votes taken at the Gasparilla Island Bridge Authority’s quarterly meeting on Friday, Nov. 2, the biggest was a vote to put aside the bids that were opened on Oct. 31. The new plan is to restart the process once the board has the completed engineering plans in hand, which should coincide with the timing of the bids being opened in March.

Contractors employed with the companies that proposed the rejected bids have been notified.

According to GIBA Chairman David Hayes, the board determined that with only 75 percent of the bridge plans completed, it is just too early to bid.

“We waited until we had the completed plans in hand before we solicited bids for the fixed bridge project,” said Hayes. “We should do the same for the swing bridge.”
